Preparing Your Kids for a Family Photoshoot – With Understanding, Patience and Heart

Because every child deserves to feel safe, seen, and celebrated in front of the camera.

Let’s be honest, family photos can feel daunting. You’ve organised the outfits, checked the weather, packed the snacks…and now you’re hoping the kids will smile, stay still, and somehow cooperate for an hour. Here’s the thing: they don’t have to.

As both a photographer and a former teacher with over 16 years of experience working with children (including those with additional support needs) I understand that no two families are the same. Some kids run straight into the frame with a big smile; others hang back until they feel comfortable. My approach is all about meeting your family exactly where you are, taking the pressure off, and capturing the genuine connection that unfolds naturally.

1. Choose the right time of day

If your child has a particular rhythm or time when they’re happiest, let’s work with that. Morning can be lovely for little ones, while older kids might be more relaxed later in the day. For children with a neurodevelopmental difference, consider when they feel most regulated – avoiding transitions like mealtimes or bedtime. I’ll always do my best to accommodate what works best for your family.

2. Keep expectations light

The best family photos don’t come from “smile at the camera” moments, they come from play, cuddles, and laughter. It’s absolutely okay if your child doesn’t want to look at me, needs to hold a fidget or familiar toy, or wants to explore for a while. I’ll follow their lead and capture the magic in the in-between moments.

3. Bring familiar comforts

A favourite toy, blanket, or even headphones can make a big difference. If your child is sensitive to noise, movement, or new environments, we’ll take things slowly. Outdoor sessions can be especially grounding, with room to move and no harsh lights or sounds.

4. Snacks, breaks, and silliness are all welcome

We’ll build in plenty of time for breaks (for snacks, water, and rest). Some of my favourite images come right after a moment of pure silliness. When children feel seen and safe, that’s when their real personalities shine.

5. Extra support for children with neurodevelopmental differences

Having both professional and personal experience (I have a neuro-spicy family), I understand that certain situations can feel overwhelming or unpredictable. To make your experience as calm and positive as possible, I can offer:

  • A child-friendly guide or social story before your session, showing what to expect (so there are no surprises).
  • Simple, visual cues that help children understand what’s happening next.
  • A pre-session chat to discuss any sensory preferences, triggers, or routines that help your child feel comfortable.

My goal is always to make your session feel safe, fun, and flexible. Together, we’ll create an environment where your child can truly be themselves, and that’s when the most authentic photos happen.

6. Communication is key

If there’s anything I should know before your session – from sensitivities to sound or texture, to the best way to help your child feel comfortable – you can share it in the pre-session questionnaire or directly by message. These small insights help me prepare the environment and guide the pace of the shoot.

The goal isn’t perfect behaviour – it’s connection.

I don’t want a photoshoot that feels like a performance. I want one that feels like you. Messy hair, muddy hands, tickle fights, quiet moments, that’s where your family’s story lives.
